The purpose of this position statement is to set out the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society position on the use of EBTs in the clinical practice in the United Kingdom to support both patients and clinicians.

Mr Ahmed Ahmed is a consultant in upper gastrointestinal surgery and lead bariatric surgeon at Imperial Weight Centre. He has performed over 10,000 laparoscopic bariatric procedures, including over 7,000 gastric bypasses. He has trained in general and upper GI surgery in the UK and also at Stanford University and the University of Rochester in the US. He trains other surgeons in the field of bariatric surgery and is on the faculty of numerous courses on bariatric surgery. He is also actively involved in bariatric surgery research and has numerous publications in peer reviewed journals. He is a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), International Federation of Surgery for Obesity (IFSO), Society of American Gastroenterological and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), Association of Upper GI Surgeons (AUGIS) and the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS). In 2007, he was awarded the International Federation of Surgery for Obesity (IFSO) scholarship. Mr Ahmed is often consulted by other professionals and medicolegal experts for his opinions on complex bariatric surgery cases. His Imperial Weight Centre bariatric surgery unit in London has been designated as an international centre of excellence for bariatric surgery and he now sits on the prestigious International Bariatric Surgery Review Committee (IBSRC). 

Mr Ahmed was elected to council of the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS) in 2017 and took over as Treasurer in 2021.  He was also elected to the council of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2020.

Andy is the current Royal College of Surgeons Senior Clinical Fellow in Bariatric Surgery at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton. He hs trained in specialist upper GI surgical units in the South East of England (Chichester and Ashford and St Peters Bariatric Units) as well as completing advanced surgical training in Upper GI and Bariatric Surgery at Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide, Australia. He has a special interest in the introduction and evaluation of novel surgical technologies including bariatric endoscopy, having received specialist training at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard University in Boston, USA

Having read for a PhD in Surgical Innovation at Imperial College in 2016, he has completed several studies using large clinical and routinely collated datasets including the National Bariatric Surgery Registry. As a result of this work, he had received awards from the National Institute for Health Research, the Royal Society of Medicine, the Digestive Disorders Federation, the European Association of Endoscopic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, the Dunhill Medical Foundation & the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

His extensive background in clinical practice and research led to him being offered a NICE Scholarship in 2019 to investigate the adoption of Clinical Guideline 189 Quality Standards on using metabolic surgery for patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes.

 

He hopes to support the NBSR in incorporating endoscopic bariatric therapies and using the dataset to guide improvements in UK bariatric surgery.
