Chris is a bariatric surgeon at St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester and Visiting Professor at the University of Surrey. He supports the BOMSS approach to evidence based practice and quality improvement.

Dee has worked as a qualified nurse for the past 41years both in the Armed Forces and NHS.

She qualified as a Surgical Care Practitioner whilst working at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust in 2005 specialising in UGI & Bariatric Surgery.

Dee has a BSc hon in Clinical practice with a post graduate Msc module in Obesity management and is also an Associate Member of the Royal College of Surgeons.

Dee currently provides specialist surgical assistance in UGI and Bariatric surgery as well as providing gastric band adjustment clinics and pre and post operative phone support for Bariatric patients. 

Dee is proud to have been voted onto the BOMSS Patient Safety Committee and the opportunity to help drive improvements in patient safety and improve patient outcomes.

Kamal Mahawar

Kamal Mahawar is a Consultant General/ Bariatric Surgeon & NatSSIP Lead at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, and Visiting Professor at the University of Sunderland. Mr. Mahawar is BOMSS Treasurer and past Chair of the National Bariatric Surgery Registry (NBSR) committee. He also sits on the scientific committee of IFSO. He was one of the editors of the second and the third NBSR reports.

Kamal has authored over 175 peer-reviewed publications, multiple book chapters in prestigious titles, and two books widely appreciated in media ("The Ethical Doctor" published by Harper Collins and "Fight with Fat") He is the Co-Editor of “Journal of Bariatric Surgery” published by Wolters Kluwer and Associate Editor of “Obesity Surgery”, “Annals of Royal College of Surgeons England”, and “Clinical Obesity”. In addition, Kamal is on the editorial board of SOARD and other journals. The journal “Obesity Surgery” published his biography in 2018.

Kamal sits on the council of the ASGBI (and is its Associate Director for conferences). He is the Northern England representative on the council of the British Benign Upper Gastrointestinal Surgical Society (BBUGSS) and is the chief co-ordinator of The Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons (TUGS).

Michael Courtney is a Consultant General/Bariatric Surgeon based at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. He graduated from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 2009 and then completed his surgical training in the North East and Cumbria, including spending two years with the bariatric team at the Sunderland Royal Hospital. In addition to his position on the BOMSS Patient Safety Committee, Michael is also Lead for Emergency General Surgery at South Tyneside and Sunderland Trust and is a member of LocSSIP Implementation Group.

Professor Yitka Graham is the BOMSS National Research Lead. Yitka is Head of the Helen McArdle Nursing and Care Research Institute and Associate Professor of Health Services Research at the University of Sunderland. As part of her academic role, she holds a research role in the Bariatric Surgical Unit at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. Professor Graham's research interests are patient experiences of bariatric surgery, the psychosocial impact of bariatric surgery, challenging the stigma of obesity and the roles of the multidisciplinary team and workforce issues in bariatric surgical care.

Will graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1999.  After his higher surgical training in the West Midlands he completed fellowships in Bariatic surgery in Taunton and Sydney, Australia.  He has been a consultant Upper GI and Bariatric Surgeon at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester since 2013.

Will has a career interest in surgical education and was heavily involved with the work of the Association of Surgeons in Training and the surgical colleges throughout his surgical training.  Having worked in a number of educational positions as a consultant, he is now the Training Programme Director for General Surgery in HEKSS.  He is also the Educational Supervisor for the highly successful, post-CCT fellowship in Bariatric Surgery in Chichester.

He is a strong advocate for Bariatric patients and is delighted to be part of BOMSS Patient Safety Committee, championing their cause and helping to drive improvements in patient care within the specialty.

Mr. Omar graduated and obtained the master of science in surgery from Alexandria school of medicine in Egypt. Subsequently, he obtained the membership of the royal college of surgeons and the fellowship of the European board of surgery in 2017.  His work in four different healthcare systems has enabled him to look at healthcare issues at systems level and examine unique solutions.

He takes a special interest in clinical research with a patient safety focus. He has published many scientific papers including a randomised controlled trial as a first author. He is comfortable working in large multinational teams of researchers. He was a key member of the LocSSIP implementation group for South Tyneside and Sunderland Foundation Trust during his stay there. He is a member of the ASGBI research committee, BOMSS patient safety committee, and TUGS multinational audits steering group.

Chetan Parmar

Consultant Bariatric/UGI and General Surgeon & Clinical Lead

The Whittington Hospital NHS Trust, London

Chetan Parmar is a Consultant Bariatric/General Surgeon and Clinical Director of the Surgery and Cancer Unit at Whittington Health NHS Trust, London. He holds the position of Honorary Associate Professor at University College London. His dedication to academia and innovation led to his appointment as the COVID research lead during the pandemic, subsequently leading to be appointed the Joint Director for Research and Innovation. Additionally, Chetan leads the North Thames UGI NIHR Clinical Research Network. With a passion for education and training he serves as the Surgical Tutor for the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Over his career, he has performed thousands of operations specializing in bariatric surgeries and endoscopies. He actively engages in collaborative, high quality, patient-centred research and serves as the principal investigator for multiple NIHR-funded trials. Chetan has over 150 peer-reviewed publications and several book chapters of reputed publishing house. He is the Associate Editor of textbook ‘Obesity, Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery: A Comprehensive Guide,’ published by Springer in 2022. He is an editor and reviewer of numerous esteemed journals including Obesity Surgery and SOARD. Recognised for his expertise, he is regularly invited to speak at national and international conferences. He is grateful to be conferred an honorary professor title for his contributions. He holds position as an elected council member of IFSO and MGB-OAGB International Club.

He is a member of the patient safety and NBSR committee of BOMSS and strives to improve patient outcomes. He has chaired the Annual Scientific Meeting of BOMSS since 2021, successfully organising conference at the University of Oxford, Brighton and Birmingham. Following June 2024 ASM at Harrogate he will commence the role of BOMSS Professional Educational Lead.
